Paul Reubens, known as Pee-wee Herman, died last night after a private battle with cancer. He was 70 years old.

1 – The Pee-Wee Character Began As Improv

Paul Reubens claimed that the origin of the character of Pee-wee Herman was actually a work of improvisation. While working at The Groundlings, a Los Angeles comedy and improv troupe, Reubens tried out for the character on stage. And the rest, as they say, is history!

2 – Reubens Acted Until 2021

Although the majority of his acting and entertainment career was in the 1980s and 1990s, Reubens actually worked until a few years ago. He has recently starred in TV, film and video games including Gotham (2016, 2017), The Tom And Jerry Show (2021) and Call Of Duty (2016)!

3 – Reubens Wanted To Be Credited As Pee-wee Herman

To further sell the premise that Pee-wee was in fact a real person and not just an invented character, Reubens only wanted to be credited in the films as Pee-wee Herman as himself!

4. Pee-wee’s Film debut was in a stoner movie

As an aspiring actor and comedian, Paul Reubens’ first credited acting gig came in the former stoner franchise of the infamous Cheech & Chong in Cheech & Chong’s Next Movie.

Pee-wee was first introduced to a national audience as a comic strip by the legendary HBO television/cinema network, which broadcast performances of The Pee-wee Herman Show in 1981.

After 2 popular seasons, the 3rd installment of Pee-wee’s Playhouse was cut short because of the 1988 WGA writer’s strike. It only featured 3 total episodes, with 1 of them (Pee-wee’s Playhouse Christmas Special)  being a primetime special.

10 – Pee-wee Made It To Broadway

Pee-wee made a comeback in October of 2010, of sorts. Broadway instantly picked up a limited run of his hit show.
